Jesus is risen. As rede\u00ade\u00admed and recon\u00adci\u00adled peo\u00adp\u00adle, we are cal\u00adled to disci\u00adple\u00adship and equip\u00adped with wis\u00addom and strength by the Holy Spi\u00adrit. But what should this disci\u00adple\u00adship con\u00adsist of in prac\u00adti\u00adcal terms? Jesus hims\u00adelf explains this to us in his exam\u00adp\u00adle of the Good Sama\u00adri\u00adtan. In its figu\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve lan\u00adguage, this exam\u00adp\u00adle is both an expl\u00adana\u00adti\u00adon and a challenge.<\/p>\n
A man falls among the rob\u00adbers. He goes from Jeru\u00adsa\u00adlem (whe\u00adre God lives) to Jeri\u00adcho (the con\u00addem\u00adned city). Is it his own fault? In any case, Jesus beg\u00adins his exam\u00adp\u00adle of disci\u00adple\u00adship with this man. Short\u00adly befo\u00adre, a tea\u00adcher of the law had asked how to live a pro\u00adper life with God. The right ans\u00adwer was: \tIt is the image of fal\u00adlen huma\u00adni\u00adty, which has distanced its\u00adelf from God, on the path to dam\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon that will end in death.<\/p>\n The man is caught by the rob\u00adbers, who strip, beat him, make off and lea\u00adve him half dead.<\/p>\n \tMan, who is distanced from God, falls under the con\u00adtrol of the devil, who hates peo\u00adp\u00adle, God\u2019s crea\u00adtures. He wants to rob peo\u00adp\u00adle and take their lives:<\/p>\n \tNaked as after the fall of man \u2013 wit\u00adhout a gar\u00adment \u2013 wit\u00adhout for\u00adgi\u00adve\u00adness and reconciliation This per\u00adson is the very image of a per\u00adson wit\u00adhout God. He needs help, sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon, heal\u00ading, recon\u00adci\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon. The\u00adre are so many peo\u00adp\u00adle living around us who may not have fal\u00adlen vic\u00adtim to rob\u00adbers phy\u00adsi\u00adcal\u00adly, but who are tra\u00advel\u00adling along the same paths and have been atta\u00adcked, rob\u00adbed, maltrea\u00adted and half-kil\u00adled by rob\u00adbers of the heart. Too much to die, too litt\u00adle to live. \tAnd he went to him: don\u2019t let him come, but go. Com\u00adpas\u00adsio\u00adna\u00adte peo\u00adp\u00adle, fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Christ are moved people. The Spi\u00adrit of God reve\u00adals the truth to us and explains the grace that is in Jesus Christ. \tBan\u00adda\u00adge the wounds: Pro\u00adtect them from fur\u00adther inju\u00adry, give them space to heal, sup\u00adport them. Inju\u00adred peo\u00adp\u00adle need \u00abban\u00adda\u00adges\u00bb that we app\u00adly to them. The ban\u00adda\u00adges are God\u2019s pro\u00admi\u00adses that teach us to think cor\u00adrect\u00adly and thus heal our injuries. What did the inju\u00adred man have to do? Not\u00adhing \u2013 but he allo\u00adwed hims\u00adelf to be trea\u00adted. If you too are such an inju\u00adred per\u00adson, then come to Christ and his grace and truth and you will be healed. \tWhy did the priest and the Levi\u00adte in the sto\u00adry of the Good Sama\u00adri\u00adtan see the inju\u00adred man, but just kept walking? Jesus is risen. \n\u00abYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind. And: \u00abLove your neigh\u00adbour as yours\u00adelf\u00bb \u00bb (Luke 10:27 NLB<\/span>). In other words: if you want to love God, you should love your neighbour.
\n\u00abDo this\u2026!\u00bb said Jesus.
\nBut how does that work in prac\u00adti\u00adce? That\u2019s what the tea\u00adcher of the law wan\u00adted to know. Jesus then gave the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing example:
\n\u00abThen Jesus ans\u00adwe\u00adred and said, \u00abThe\u00adre was a man who was going down from Jeru\u00adsa\u00adlem to Jeri\u00adcho and fell among the rob\u00adbers, who strip\u00adped him and beat him and depar\u00adted, lea\u00adving him half dead.Now it hap\u00adpen\u00aded that a priest was going down the same road, and when he saw him, he pas\u00adsed by.Likewise also a Levi\u00adte: when he came to the place and saw him, he pas\u00adsed by.But a Sama\u00adri\u00adtan who was tra\u00advel\u00adling came the\u00adre, and when he saw him, he was distres\u00adsed; so he went to him, pou\u00adred oil and wine on his wounds and ban\u00adda\u00adged them, lifted him up on his ani\u00admal, brought him to an inn and nur\u00adsed him.The next day he took out two pen\u00adnies and gave them to the inn\u00adkee\u00adper, say\u00ading, \u00abTake care of him, and if you spend more, I will pay you when I come back\u00bb (Luke 10:30\u201335 LUT<\/span>).
\nThis exam\u00adp\u00adle of Jesus is full of clues and images for our lives. Let\u2019s dis\u00adco\u00adver some of them:
\nPart 1: Man on the way
\nA man is on his way from Jeru\u00adsa\u00adlem to Jeri\u00adcho. He lea\u00adves the city whe\u00adre God lives at 750 met\u00adres abo\u00adve sea level and walks downhill to Jeri\u00adcho, the con\u00addem\u00adned city which, accor\u00adding to Joshua 6:26, should never have been rebuilt \u2013 250 met\u00adres below sea level.<\/p>\n
\n\tBea\u00adten, destroyed
\n\tAban\u00addo\u00adned, alone
\n\tHalf-dead \u2013 exis\u00adtence wit\u00adhout life.<\/p>\n
\nPart 2: Three men who could help
\nDisci\u00adple\u00adship means loving your neigh\u00adbour: three men meet this \u00abneigh\u00adbour\u00bb:
\nFirst comes a priest. He goes down the same road. He sees the maltrea\u00adted man, but sim\u00adply pas\u00adses by. A priest is one cal\u00adled by God to bring sacri\u00adfices for recon\u00adci\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon \u2013 to be God\u2019s mouth\u00adpie\u00adce. But he is on the same wrong path. No empa\u00adthy for the plight of man. He is cer\u00adtain\u00adly reli\u00adgious, but mis\u00adses the real tar\u00adget \u2013 the neigh\u00adbour. A Levi\u00adte would be a ser\u00advant of the Lord cal\u00adled by God for the prac\u00adti\u00adcal ser\u00advice of God. He too is on this road to Jeri\u00adcho, he sees the inju\u00adred man, pas\u00adses by and also mis\u00adses his mis\u00adsi\u00adon to his neighbour.
\nThen a Sama\u00adri\u00adtan comes along. He is tra\u00advel\u00adling \u2013 not on his way to Jeri\u00adcho. He also comes across the man. When he sees him, he \u00ablaments\u00bb, the Sama\u00adri\u00adtan is touch\u00aded. Jesus descri\u00adbes this \u00ablamen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon\u00bb seve\u00adral times: at the sight of the scat\u00adte\u00adred peo\u00adp\u00adle wit\u00adhout a she\u00adp\u00adherd, the blind man, the leper, the widow with her dead son\u2026 Jesus allows hims\u00adelf to be touch\u00aded by people\u2019s suf\u00adfe\u00adring. This fee\u00adling is often descri\u00adbed as com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon and cited as an essen\u00adti\u00adal cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adristic of God and Christ. As fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Christ, we too should be merciful:
\n\u00abI want you to be mer\u00adciful; I do not want your sacri\u00adfices\u00bb (Hosea 6:6 NLB<\/span>).
\nIn con\u00adtrast to pity, whe\u00adre I sym\u00adpa\u00adthise with someone who has suf\u00adfe\u00adr\u00aded through no fault of their own, mer\u00adcy means having com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon for a per\u00adson who has fal\u00adlen into suf\u00adfe\u00adring through their own fault. This com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adses our Sama\u00adri\u00adtan. Alt\u00adhough the per\u00adson was on the wrong path, the Sama\u00adri\u00adtan helps. This \u00aballo\u00adwing ones\u00adelf to com\u00adplain\u00bb is the key moment in Jesus\u00bb example.
\nWhat do we see with the\u00adse three men?
\nThe priest and the Levi\u00adte sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adse a prag\u00adma\u00adtic reli\u00adgious\u00adness. The Good Sama\u00adri\u00adtan is about peo\u00adp\u00adle. It is the same with Christ: fol\u00adlo\u00adwing him is not pri\u00adma\u00adri\u00adly about reli\u00adgious issues, but about people.
\nThe Sama\u00adri\u00adtan did not spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adcal\u00adly set out in search of peo\u00adp\u00adle, but he was pre\u00adpared to encoun\u00adter inju\u00adred peo\u00adp\u00adle on his journey.
\nNow \u2013 which of the\u00adse three peo\u00adp\u00adle are you, am I? Do I see my neigh\u00adbour, even if he is lying down through his own fault?
\nPart 3: The Sama\u00adri\u00adtan and his service
\nThe Samaritan\u2019s sub\u00adse\u00adquent actions show the effect of divi\u00adne mer\u00adcy. The Sama\u00adri\u00adtan is an image of Christ\u2019s actions, which we as his fol\u00adlo\u00adwers, empowered by the Holy Spi\u00adrit, are now to live out in the same way as ambassa\u00addors of Christ:<\/p>\n
\n\tWash wounds with oil: To wash wounds means to cle\u00adan\u00adse from dirt. Oil stands for the Holy Spi\u00adrit. The Holy Spi\u00adrit wants to lead peo\u00adp\u00adle into the truth \u2013 also about them\u00adsel\u00adves. Whe\u00adre have you\/m I been wron\u00adged, whe\u00adre have you\/have I done wrong? We need truth in our lives, we need cle\u00adan\u00adsing so that we can be saved.
\n\tWash the wounds with wine: The alco\u00adhol dis\u00adin\u00adfects and clo\u00adses the pores and pro\u00adtects against fur\u00adther dirt. The wine with its alco\u00adhol is also an image of the Holy Spi\u00adrit. The Holy Spi\u00adrit explains to us the signi\u00adfi\u00adcan\u00adce of the sacri\u00adfice of Jesus Christ, who took the punish\u00adment of death in our place and the resul\u00adting grace of God that he for\u00adgi\u00adves our sins \u2013 forever.
\n\tFor wine to be made, gra\u00adpes must be crus\u00adhed and a fer\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon pro\u00adcess is requi\u00adred. Christ took all the filth of this world upon hims\u00adelf, died on the cross, was dead for three days and rose again. On the basis of this sacri\u00adfice for us, we recei\u00adve sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon by grace (an unde\u00adser\u00adved gift).<\/p>\n
\n\u00abHe, who is the Word, beca\u00adme man and lived among us. He was full of grace and truth\u00bb (John 1:14 NLB<\/span>).
\nAs Sama\u00adri\u00adtans sent by Christ, we are now to bring the gos\u00adpel of truth and grace to woun\u00added people.
\n\u00abBut God decla\u00adres us righ\u00adteous by grace. It is his gift to us through Jesus Christ, who has freed us from our guilt\u00bb (Romans 3:24 NLB<\/span>).
\nThe truth sets us free, grace recon\u00adci\u00adles us with the hea\u00adven\u00adly Father. Christ has \u00abwashed away\u00bb ever\u00ady\u00adthing that stood bet\u00adween us and God through his sacrifice.<\/p>\n
\n\tPicking up on our own ani\u00admal: the image of let\u00adting inju\u00adred peo\u00adp\u00adle into our own lives. We often shy away from this. The Samaritan\u2019s sadd\u00adle could have been stained with blood. As the half-dead man is sit\u00adting on the ani\u00admal, the Sama\u00adri\u00adtan has to walk, which is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult. But the Sama\u00adri\u00adtan allows his own dis\u00adcom\u00adfort in order to help the other per\u00adson and is not afraid to include his own belon\u00adgings. He goes out of his com\u00adfort zone. So let us also allow tho\u00adse in need into our homes and into our lives.
\n\tTo bring to the hos\u00adtel and care for or have cared for the\u00adre: The hos\u00adtel is an image of the Chris\u00adti\u00adan com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. The\u00adre I con\u00adti\u00adnue to care for peo\u00adp\u00adle ent\u00adrus\u00adted to me. Others look after the inju\u00adred per\u00adson there
\n\tThe pri\u00adce has been paid: the Sama\u00adri\u00adtan pays for now and for later \u2013 ever\u00ady\u00adthing has been paid for. Jesus has paid the pri\u00adce for our guilt, our inju\u00adries, our heal\u00ading, our res\u00adto\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon \u2013 for ever\u00ady\u00adthing \u2013 for my past, for my pre\u00adsent and for my future.<\/p>\n
\nWhat did the Sama\u00adri\u00adtan do? Did he heal the inju\u00adred per\u00adson? No \u2013 but he crea\u00adted space for heal\u00ading. Heal\u00ading comes from God.
\nThat was the exam\u00adp\u00adle of Jesus. What does that mean for me?
\nJesus asks the tea\u00adcher of the law and the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre also you and me, who want to be fol\u00adlo\u00adwers: Who has best ful\u00adfil\u00adled the mis\u00adsi\u00adon of love for their neigh\u00adbour? Who has lived disci\u00adple\u00adship correctly?
\n\u00abWhich of the\u00adse three do you think was neigh\u00adbour to the one who fell among the rob\u00adbers? He said, \u00abThe one who show\u00aded mer\u00adcy to him. Then Jesus said to him, \u00abGo and do like\u00adwi\u00adse.\u00bb (Luke 10:36\u201337 LUT<\/span>).
