\nThis mor\u00adning I want to take you with me to this laid table. Today we cele\u00adbra\u00adte Good Fri\u00adday. We remem\u00adber that Jesus Christ was cru\u00adci\u00adfied and died. In addi\u00adti\u00adon to Good Fri\u00adday, the\u00adre are a num\u00adber of other holi\u00addays, such as Eas\u00adter, Pen\u00adte\u00adcost and Christ\u00admas. The Jews also have many dif\u00adfe\u00adrent holi\u00addays. Howe\u00adver, Pas\u00adso\u00adver is the most important holi\u00adday. And on Pas\u00adso\u00adver, Good Fri\u00adday and this gre\u00adat Jewish fes\u00adti\u00adval come tog\u00ade\u00adther. The fes\u00adti\u00advi\u00adties last a total of seven days. It ser\u00adves as a remin\u00adder of the exodus from Egypt. The Israe\u00adli\u00adtes lived in Egypt for four hundred years. They ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly came the\u00adre vol\u00adun\u00adt\u00ada\u00adri\u00adly, but were incre\u00adasing\u00adly ens\u00adlaved and suf\u00adfe\u00adr\u00aded great\u00adly as a result. \nThis fes\u00adti\u00adval is cele\u00adbra\u00adted by the Jews every year to this day and falls in March\/April. Jesus also wan\u00adted to cele\u00adbra\u00adte this feast with his disci\u00adples one last time. \u00abJesus said, \u00abI have lon\u00adged very much to cele\u00adbra\u00adte this Pas\u00adso\u00adver meal with you befo\u00adre my suf\u00adfe\u00adring beg\u00adins\u00bb \u00bb (Luke 22:15 NLB<\/span>). Jesus was a Jewish man and tea\u00adcher. A so-cal\u00adled rab\u00adbi. He was well ver\u00adsed in the tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons and had his own disci\u00adples around him, whom he moul\u00added. He obser\u00adved and cele\u00adbra\u00adted the reli\u00adgious fes\u00adti\u00advals. The Seder evening is the start of Pas\u00adso\u00adver. It is the evening when the fami\u00adly comes tog\u00ade\u00adther. Fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly, the fami\u00adly is a very cen\u00adtral place in Jewish tra\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon. On this evening, ever\u00adyo\u00adne is gathe\u00adred around one table \u2013 from the child\u00adren to the elder\u00adly. The Seder cele\u00adbra\u00adti\u00adon is a remin\u00adder of what God has done for the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes. \u00abThe LORD<\/span> said to him: \u00abI have seen how my peo\u00adp\u00adle are oppres\u00adsed in Egypt. And I have heard their cry. I know how much they are suf\u00adfe\u00adring. I have come to res\u00adcue them from the power of the Egyp\u00adti\u00adans and to lead them out of Egypt to a beau\u00adtiful, wide land, a land flowing with milk and honey [\u2026]\u00bb \u00bb (Exodus 3:7\u20138 NLB<\/span>). At the Seder cele\u00adbra\u00adti\u00adon, the fami\u00adly comes tog\u00ade\u00adther to remem\u00adber the exodus from Egypt. As we come to this table today, it is to remem\u00adber that God is still in this busi\u00adness of \u00abbrin\u00adging peo\u00adp\u00adle out\u00bb today. He takes peo\u00adp\u00adle out of whe\u00adre they are bro\u00adken and leads them to whe\u00adre they are meant to be \u2013 in free\u00addom. This mor\u00adning I want to walk you through this feast. This is not a Jewish Pas\u00adso\u00adver, but a Mes\u00adsia\u00adnic Pas\u00adso\u00adver. This means that the\u00adre are always par\u00adal\u00adlels to what Jesus Christ did on Good Friday.
\nSeder celebration
\nThe Seder cele\u00adbra\u00adti\u00adon usual\u00adly lasts seve\u00adral hours. I will the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre only go into a few things in brief today. I will touch on some things brief\u00adly, but I will deli\u00adbera\u00adte\u00adly lea\u00adve out cer\u00adtain things as they would go bey\u00adond the scope of this artic\u00adle. Cand\u00adles are lit at the begin\u00adning. I asked a woman to do this. The cand\u00adles have to be lit by a woman becau\u00adse the light of the world was born from the womb of a woman. Jesus Christ is this light: \u00ab[\u2026] I am the light of the world. Tho\u00adse who fol\u00adlow me need not wan\u00adder in the dark, for they will have the light that leads to life\u00bb (John 8:12 NLB<\/span>). The father of the house then takes over the lea\u00adder\u00adship of the celebration.
\nThe first goblet is used at the begin\u00adning. This is fil\u00adled with gra\u00adpe juice or wine. The\u00adre are a total of four goblets that are drunk at the Seder. The\u00adse are cha\u00adli\u00adces of joy. Behind the\u00adse four cups lies the memo\u00adry of how God led the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes out of Egypt. \u00abThe\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre say to the child\u00adren of Isra\u00adel, \u00abI am the LORD<\/span>, and I will bring you out from under the bur\u00addens of Egypt, and I will deli\u00adver you from their bon\u00adda\u00adge, and I will rede\u00adem you with an outstret\u00adched arm and with gre\u00adat jud\u00adge\u00adments. And I will take you as my peo\u00adp\u00adle and will be your God; and you shall know that I, the LORD<\/span>, am your God, who brings you out from under the bur\u00addens of Egypt\u00bb (Exodus 6:6\u20137 SLT<\/span>). The cups sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adse being brought out, sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon, redemp\u00adti\u00adon and accep\u00adtance. The cup can be drunk sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adcal\u00adly while stan\u00adding. It is a sign of has\u00adte befo\u00adre the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes left Egypt. The first cup sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses being brought out of slavery. The father of the house says the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing bles\u00adsing. \u00abBles\u00adsed are you, Lord our God, King of the uni\u00adver\u00adse, who cho\u00adse Isra\u00adel from all the nati\u00adons and through your coven\u00adant with Abra\u00adham set them apart and cal\u00adled them to be your wit\u00adness. Bles\u00adsed are you, Lord, that through your Son Jesus you have cal\u00adled us out of dark\u00adness into light and united us with the belie\u00advers of your peo\u00adp\u00adle Isra\u00adel into one body, into one new man\u00bb. In con\u00adnec\u00adtion with this cup, I would like to ask you a ques\u00adti\u00adon. How are you doing? How bur\u00adden\u00aded are you? What is bothe\u00adring you? The\u00adre is good news for you. God is still a God who leads peo\u00adp\u00adle out of oppres\u00adsi\u00adon \u2013 no mat\u00adter what that looks like. You can turn to him and he will lead you out.
\nThis is fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by a ritu\u00adal washing of the hands. Then the first two ele\u00adments on the Seder pla\u00adte come into play: Peter\u00adli and salt water. The salt water sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses the tears and sweat that the Jews shed in slavery. Salt water also sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses the world sepa\u00adra\u00adted from God. The pars\u00adley sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses the hys\u00adsop plant. A bunch of it was dipped in the blood of the lamb and used to paint the door\u00adposts. Anyo\u00adne who was in a house with this sym\u00adbol was spared by the angel of death \u2013 it saved the inha\u00adbi\u00adtants from God\u2019s punishment.
\nAno\u00adther ele\u00adment is loca\u00adted right in the cent\u00adre. The\u00adre are three matzos. This is unlea\u00adve\u00adned bread wit\u00adhout yeast. This sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses the hec\u00adtic depar\u00adtu\u00adre from Egypt. The midd\u00adle loaf is taken out and bro\u00adken into two pie\u00adces of dif\u00adfe\u00adrent sizes. The smal\u00adler one is put back and the lar\u00adger one is wrap\u00adped in a nap\u00adkin and put to one side to be hid\u00adden later. The child\u00adren can then go and look for it later. The fact that the\u00adre are three maces is a refe\u00adrence to the Tri\u00adni\u00adty of God: Father, Son and Holy Spi\u00adrit. The midd\u00adle one stands for the pro\u00admi\u00adsed Saviour, the Mes\u00adsiah. Jesus Christ is this pro\u00admi\u00adsed Saviour and he gives his life on the cross.
\nThis is fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by a ques\u00adti\u00adon from the youn\u00adgest child. \u00abWhy is this night dif\u00adfe\u00adrent from all other nights?\u00bb This is fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by the sto\u00adry of the Exodus from Egypt. Then comes the second cup. This sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon from hard\u00adship, from slavery. Here too, the father of the house pro\u00adno\u00adun\u00adces a bles\u00adsing. \u00abBles\u00adsed are you, O Lord our God, who have deli\u00adver\u00aded your peo\u00adp\u00adle Isra\u00adel from slavery, and that you have torn us out of the slavery of fail\u00adure and death and given us new eter\u00adnal life\u00bb. The rest of the midd\u00adle mace is now dipped into the salt water. This pro\u00adcess is also descri\u00adbed for Jesus. When Jesus Christ cele\u00adbra\u00adted the feast with his fol\u00adlo\u00adwers, he made an announce\u00adment that someone would betray him and this is the sign. \u00abHe ans\u00adwe\u00adred and said, \u00abHe who dips his hand in the dish with me will betray me\u00bb \u00bb (Matthew 26: 23 LUT<\/span>). At this point in the meal, ever\u00adyo\u00adne dips a pie\u00adce of the cent\u00adre mace into the salt water and eats it.
\nTwo other ele\u00adments of the Seder pla\u00adte are the bit\u00adter herbs, which are remi\u00adnis\u00adcent of the bit\u00adter\u00adness of slavery, the bea\u00adtings and the suf\u00adfe\u00adring in Egypt. The second is the so-cal\u00adled \u00abcha\u00adro\u00adset\u00bb. It is remi\u00adnis\u00adcent of the brown clay of Egypt, which the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes had to use to make bricks. The other matzos are now spread, top\u00adped and eaten with it. This is fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by a big din\u00adner. Two ele\u00adments are again embedded in it. The bone is a remin\u00adder of the lamb that was sacri\u00adfi\u00adced so that the angel of death would pass by the house. No bone of this lamb may be bro\u00adken. This is also the case with Jesus Christ. \u00abBut when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was alre\u00ada\u00addy dead, so they did not break his legs\u00bb (John 19:33 NLB<\/span>). An egg is also eaten here. This sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses the fra\u00adgi\u00adli\u00adty of life and the temp\u00adle. Do this in remem\u00adbrance of me\u00bb \u00bb (Luke 22:19 NLB<\/span>). He is say\u00ading that he is the ful\u00adfilm\u00adent of what is being cele\u00adbra\u00adted here. Jesus Christ is the Lamb who was sacri\u00adfi\u00adced so that death could not harm all who belie\u00adve in him. \u00ab[\u2026] For Christ, our Pas\u00adso\u00adver lamb, was sacri\u00adfi\u00adced for us\u00bb (1 Corin\u00adthi\u00adans 5:7 NLB<\/span>). He is the Pas\u00adso\u00adver lamb. But God is con\u00adcer\u00adned with much more than libe\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from oppres\u00adsi\u00adon and suf\u00adfe\u00adring. It is about libe\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon from oppres\u00adsi\u00adve guilt, heal\u00ading from ever\u00ady\u00adthing that is bro\u00adken in God\u2019s crea\u00adti\u00adon. Ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly, it is about recon\u00adci\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon with God hims\u00adelf and the asso\u00adcia\u00adted hope of a new, eter\u00adnal life with God.
\nThen comes the third cup. This repres\u00adents the redemp\u00adti\u00adon of the peo\u00adp\u00adle by God. God rede\u00ade\u00admed the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes from slavery. Through his death on the cross, Jesus Christ rede\u00ade\u00admed his fol\u00adlo\u00adwers from ever\u00ady\u00adthing that stands bet\u00adween peo\u00adp\u00adle and God. The Bible calls what stands in bet\u00adween sin. Jesus Christ now reinter\u00adprets the second ele\u00adment of the Seder cele\u00adbra\u00adti\u00adon for hims\u00adelf: \u00abAfter the meal, he took ano\u00adther cup of wine and said, \u00abThis wine is the sign of the new coven\u00adant \u2013 a coven\u00adant sea\u00adled with the blood I will shed for you\u00bb \u00bb (Luke 22:20 NLB<\/span>). For the Jews then and now, it is clear what the 3rd cup stands for. Name\u00adly for redemp\u00adti\u00adon. Jesus Christ claims this for hims\u00adelf. He is the lamb that must be sacri\u00adfi\u00adced so that peo\u00adp\u00adle can be recon\u00adci\u00adled with God and set free once and for all. He is the Saviour. The accep\u00adtance of this coven\u00adant is vol\u00adun\u00adt\u00ada\u00adry. Anyo\u00adne who wis\u00adhes may take it and expe\u00adri\u00adence sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon, libe\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon and hope through Jesus Christ. Final\u00adly comes the fourth cup. This sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adses that God accepts the peo\u00adp\u00adle of Isra\u00adel as his own. Through what Jesus Christ has done, God accepts all tho\u00adse who belie\u00adve in him as his child\u00adren. This makes them his property.
\nGood Fri\u00adday and Eas\u00adter are a sign that the Pas\u00adso\u00adver found its ful\u00adfilm\u00adent in Jesus Christ. Through him, peo\u00adp\u00adle were rede\u00ade\u00admed. Just as the Jews remem\u00adber the Exodus from Egypt on Pas\u00adso\u00adver, fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Jesus remem\u00adber the death of Jesus Christ on Good Fri\u00adday. It is a remin\u00adder that fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Jesus Christ have alre\u00ada\u00addy been led out. They are rede\u00ade\u00admed. The\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre, their lives should also be cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adri\u00adsed by living in this freedom.
