\u00ab<\/span>Hope dies last\u00bb is a com\u00admon say\u00ading. The Bible also speaks of hope. But this Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope is very con\u00adcre\u00adte. It is a trust in the trust\u00adwort\u00adhi\u00adness of God. It has its foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon in the resur\u00adrec\u00adtion of Jesus Christ. This resur\u00adrec\u00adtion hope gives a per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve for the moment, but also for an uncer\u00adtain future. Such hope moves and moti\u00adva\u00adtes. Such hope gives mea\u00adning to life.<\/p>\n

As alre\u00ada\u00addy war\u00adned in a ser\u00admon almost six months ago, I will only bring examp\u00adles from my son. He is now 7 weeks old and thri\u00adving. He is gai\u00adning weight well and we are hap\u00adpy that this is the case. But towards the end of the pregnan\u00adcy it was\u00adn\u2019t quite like that. The clo\u00adser the due date came, the more we feared that our baby would put on more and more weight and that all the cute clo\u00adthes we had alre\u00ada\u00addy bought would no lon\u00adger fit him. In the end, we were hap\u00adpy that our boy was born almost on time and that his weight and size were also within the avera\u00adge ran\u00adge. From the begin\u00adning, our son had long black hair. After the first bath it stood up and yes, this is not extra, but natu\u00adral. During pregnan\u00adcy we hoped for a baby as hear\u00adty and pret\u00adty as pos\u00adsi\u00adble and yes I know all par\u00adents think their baby is the most beau\u00adtiful thing. But for us it\u2019s true\u2026;-) While our hopes during pregnan\u00adcy were still very super\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal, the word hope still accom\u00adpa\u00adnies us. Hop\u00adeful\u00adly we have enough nap\u00adpies with us. Hop\u00adeful\u00adly we can inter\u00adpret our son\u2019s signs cor\u00adrect\u00adly and give him the right thing. Hop\u00adeful\u00adly I remem\u00adber to put a cloth over my should\u00aders when I hold him upright so that ever\u00ady\u00adthing does\u00adn\u2019t get dir\u00adty when he vomits. Hop\u00adeful\u00adly I will be a good father. What are your hopes?
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan hope is more con\u00adcre\u00adte than thought!
\nHope is some\u00adthing that accom\u00adpa\u00adnies us. Hope car\u00adri\u00ades us through dif\u00adfi\u00adcult times, hope dri\u00adves us on. Every time I am at the air\u00adport and tra\u00advel\u00adling, I hope that today is the moment when I final\u00adly get a free busi\u00adness class upgrade. Unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adte\u00adly, this has not hap\u00adpen\u00aded yet, but as we all know, hope dies last. For fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Jesus Christ, hope is also some\u00adthing important and dri\u00adves life. But what kind of hope is this? In order to trace this Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope, we want to dive tog\u00ade\u00adther into a ver\u00adse writ\u00adten in the Let\u00adter to the Hebrews. \u00abWhat then is faith? It is the con\u00adfi\u00addence that what we hope for will come true, and the con\u00advic\u00adtion that what is not seen exists\u00bb (Hebrews 11:1 NLB<\/span>). At first glan\u00adce, it is true that faith as such is being spo\u00adken of here. But here faith and hope are clo\u00adse\u00adly rela\u00adted. But what is the dif\u00adfe\u00adrence? Faith is a trust in the trust\u00adwort\u00adhi\u00adness of God as descri\u00adbed to us in the Bible. Faith can be mark\u00aded off against abo\u00adve and below by hope. Faith stops whe\u00adre I see some\u00adthing. No hope is nee\u00added the\u00adre. Hope only comes into play when I look into the future, into the unknown. But faith is more than \u00abI think it will rain today\u00bb. Faith is a firm con\u00advic\u00adtion based on a solid foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon. Chris\u00adti\u00adan faith has its foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon in Jesus Christ. While faith looks to God and trusts him in all things, hope looks to the future and trusts God in it. Faith is a trust in view of all things, hope is a trust in view of the future.
\nBut this does not tell us what con\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtes bibli\u00adcal hope. Col\u00adlo\u00adqui\u00adal\u00adly, hope is unders\u00adtood as hope, con\u00adfi\u00addence in the future. It is a con\u00adfi\u00addence, per\u00adhaps even an opti\u00admism about what the future will bring. This hope is rather vague, it is not gua\u00adran\u00adteed that things will turn out the way I hope. It can also turn out just dif\u00adfer\u00adent\u00adly than I had hoped. In the New Tes\u00adta\u00adment, the word \u00abelpis\u00bb always appears whe\u00adre the Ger\u00adman trans\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon says hope. This is not wrong, becau\u00adse \u00abelpis\u00bb also includes this mea\u00adning. But it also means expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon and pro\u00ads\u00adpect. When we expect some\u00adthing or have a pro\u00ads\u00adpect of some\u00adthing, this is more con\u00adcre\u00adte. It is cer\u00adtain that some\u00adthing is coming. Even if per\u00adhaps the con\u00adcre\u00adte rea\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon looks dif\u00adfe\u00adrent. Yes I can hope for a long time to get a busi\u00adness class upgrade, but when my wife was pregnant, yes she was in joyful expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon. So when hope is writ\u00adten in the Bible, it is not vague, but it is an expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon that has its ful\u00adfilm\u00adent in the future. This expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, in turn, is stron\u00adgly con\u00adnec\u00adted to the ques\u00adti\u00adon of mea\u00adning. Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope is meaningful becau\u00adse it has its foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon in Jesus Christ. Vaclav Havel, a Czech wri\u00adter and the first pre\u00adsi\u00addent of the Czech Repu\u00adblic, descri\u00adbed hope as fol\u00adlows: \u00abHope is not the con\u00advic\u00adtion that some\u00adthing will turn out well, but the cer\u00adtain\u00adty that some\u00adthing has mea\u00adning, no mat\u00adter how it turns out\u00bb (Vaclav Havel).
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan hope is resur\u00adrec\u00adtion hope!
\nAlt\u00adhough Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope is a hope that looks con\u00adfi\u00addent\u00adly into the future, it has its ori\u00adg\u00adins in the past. Cer\u00adtain\u00adly more than 25 times, the teaser for our annu\u00adal the\u00adme Crea\u00adtio \u2013 Hope and Respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty ran befo\u00adre the ser\u00admon. The first, per\u00adhaps more sombre part is dedi\u00adca\u00adted to man\u2019s respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty for God\u2019s crea\u00adti\u00adon and the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre, in part, whe\u00adre this is unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adte\u00adly not per\u00adcei\u00adved. But the second part fol\u00adlows prompt\u00adly. After the wave comes God\u2019s ans\u00adwer: Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. A new begin\u00adning. Jesus has accom\u00adplished it. His death shakes the earth. His resur\u00adrec\u00adtion is the begin\u00adning of a new crea\u00adti\u00adon. Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope lies in this ans\u00adwer of the teaser.
\nJesus Christ brought res\u00adto\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. He died so that the way to the hea\u00adven\u00adly Father beca\u00adme free for us humans. What began dis\u00adas\u00adtrous\u00adly in the Gar\u00adden of Eden, with human beings them\u00adsel\u00adves wan\u00adting to be like God, was rever\u00adsed through Jesus Christ. It is the begin\u00adning of a new crea\u00adti\u00adon. For Jesus Christ not only died on the cross, but he also rose from the dead. On the plau\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of this resur\u00adrec\u00adtion, Mat\u00adthi\u00adas gave a ser\u00admon at Eas\u00adter entit\u00adled \u00abEas\u00adter \u2013 more than a spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal thought\u00bb. It is essen\u00adti\u00adal for Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. On the third day after the death of Jesus Christ, when a few women come to the tomb, they are asked a ques\u00adti\u00adon by the angels pre\u00adsent the\u00adre. \u00abWhy do you seek the living among the dead?\u00bb (Luke 24:5b NLB<\/span>) Jesus Christ is Lord over death. We humans were crea\u00adted in the image of God. God desi\u00adres a rela\u00adti\u00adonship with each indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal. All tho\u00adse who call them\u00adsel\u00adves fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Jesus are expres\u00adsing that they fol\u00adlow Jesus Christ, that they have faith in him. Fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Christ have the hope, inde\u00aded the firm con\u00adfi\u00addence and expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon that they too will one day rise from the dead and spend eter\u00adni\u00adty with him in hea\u00adven. Not only is the\u00adre a floa\u00adting spi\u00adrit of mine the\u00adre, but I as C\u00e9d\u00adric Br\u00fcg\u00adger will be the\u00adre. With body, mind, body and soul.
\nAlt\u00adhough Chris\u00adti\u00adan hope is based on the hope of resur\u00adrec\u00adtion in the future, it is not limi\u00adt\u00aded to that. For it is a hope of being with God befo\u00adre and after death! Fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Jesus do not know what tomor\u00adrow holds for them, but they know who holds tomor\u00adrow in his hand.
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan hope, howe\u00adver, is not only clo\u00adse\u00adly rela\u00adted to faith, but also to love (1 Corin\u00adthi\u00adans 13:13). This hope can be descri\u00adbed as fol\u00adlows in the words of the Apost\u00adle Paul from the Let\u00adter to the Romans. \u00abI am con\u00advin\u00adced: not\u00adhing can sepa\u00adra\u00adte us from his love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor powers, neither our fears in the pre\u00adsent nor our worries about the future, not even the powers of hell can sepa\u00adra\u00adte us from the love of God. And were we high abo\u00adve the hea\u00advens or were we in the deepest depths of the oce\u00adan, not\u00adhing and no one in all crea\u00adti\u00adon can sepa\u00adra\u00adte us from the love of God that appeared in Christ Jesus our Lord\u00bb (Romans 8:38\u201339 NLB<\/span>).
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan hope is moving hope!
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan hope is resur\u00adrec\u00adtion hope! The oppo\u00adsi\u00adte of this hope is not hope\u00adl\u00adess\u00adness. It is rather a wai\u00adting into emp\u00adtin\u00adess. Or to put it even more dra\u00adsti\u00adcal\u00adly, it is a life into emp\u00adtin\u00adess. Such a life is not only uncer\u00adtain, but also emp\u00adty of mea\u00adning. Fol\u00adlo\u00adwers of Jesus have to ask them\u00adsel\u00adves again and again: Do you live out your faith and disci\u00adple\u00adship as if Jesus Christ rose from the dead? Or is your disci\u00adple\u00adship more like that of a decea\u00adsed idol? Does the angels\u00bb request to the women at the tomb app\u00adly to you? Why do you seek the living among the dead? (Luke 24:5b) Fol\u00adlo\u00adwing Jesus Christ is accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by a moving hope, not a dead hope.
\nAfter Jesus rose from the dead, he met many peo\u00adp\u00adle. Among them were two disci\u00adples who were on their way to Emaus. They were wal\u00adking and sud\u00adden\u00adly Jesus Christ came to them, but they did not reco\u00adg\u00adni\u00adse him. They were tal\u00adking to each other and Jesus was very clo\u00adse to them. He spent time with them and explai\u00adned the Bible to them. Only at the very end of the encoun\u00adter did they rea\u00adli\u00adse that the man who had spent the day with them was Jesus Christ the Risen One. Their reac\u00adtion is cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adristic of an encoun\u00adter with the divi\u00adne. \u00abThey said to one ano\u00adther, \u00abWeren\u2019t we stran\u00adge\u00adly warm at heart when he spo\u00adke to us on the way and inter\u00adpre\u00adted the Scrip\u00adtures to us?\u00bb \u00bb (Luke 24:32 NLB<\/span>). The encoun\u00adter with Jesus Christ tou\u00adch\u00ades and does not lea\u00adve us cold. Alt\u00adhough Jesus Christ is no lon\u00adger phy\u00adsi\u00adcal\u00adly among us, we can encoun\u00adter him. Per\u00adhaps we also do so as the two disci\u00adples did. In the moment its\u00adelf we feel that some\u00adthing is dif\u00adfe\u00adrent, but only in retro\u00ads\u00adpect do we rea\u00adli\u00adse that God met us in that moment.
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan faith stands in this ten\u00adsi\u00adon of see\u00ading and hoping. The\u00adre are good reasons to belie\u00adve in Jesus Christ, but at some point it beco\u00admes just that, a belief. Becau\u00adse faith is about things that are not seen. Whe\u00adre see\u00ading beg\u00adins, belie\u00adving ends. But along with faith, a hope, a firm expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon sets in. This hope gives mea\u00adning to one\u2019s life. But this is not only for the future, but also in the here and now. What this hope can do is shown in a text from Isai\u00adah 61. If we read in the New Tes\u00adta\u00adment, we see how Jesus Christ accom\u00adplished the\u00adse things. But also today we see Jesus Christ accom\u00adpli\u00adshing exact\u00adly the\u00adse things in peo\u00adp\u00adle who choo\u00adse to live as fol\u00adlo\u00adwers for him. Jesus Christ hims\u00adelf claims the\u00adse ver\u00adses to accom\u00adplish just that (Luke 4). \u00abThe Spi\u00adrit of the Lord God rests on me, becau\u00adse the Lord has anoin\u00adted me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the bro\u00adken\u00adhe\u00adar\u00adted and to pro\u00adcla\u00adim that the cap\u00adti\u00adves will be set free and tho\u00adse in bon\u00adda\u00adge will be set free. He has sent me to pro\u00adcla\u00adim a year of grace from the Lord and a day of ven\u00adge\u00adan\u00adce from our God, and to com\u00adfort all who mourn\u00bb (Isai\u00adah 61:1\u20132 NLB<\/span>).
\nChris\u00adti\u00adan hope is a con\u00adcre\u00adte, moving resur\u00adrec\u00adtion hope. It is a trust in the trust\u00adwort\u00adhi\u00adness of God. It has its foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon in the resur\u00adrec\u00adtion of Jesus Christ. This resur\u00adrec\u00adtion hope gives a per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve for the moment, but also for an uncer\u00adtain future. Such hope moves and moti\u00adva\u00adtes. Such hope gives mea\u00adning to life. How would it be if today in the bis\u00adtro, for exam\u00adp\u00adle, you did not first talk about the holi\u00addays, the wea\u00adther, yesterday\u2019s foot\u00adball match or poli\u00adtics, but first tal\u00adked about what gives your life hope? And thus also what gives your life meaning?
