\u00ab<\/span>Deal with others as others should deal with you. This sen\u00adtence sums up the Law and the Pro\u00adphe\u00adts\u00bb (Matthew 7:12 NLB<\/span>). This is the so-cal\u00adled Gol\u00adden Rule of Jesus. In this one sen\u00adtence is the poten\u00adti\u00adal to chan\u00adge the world for the bet\u00adter. After the Gol\u00adden Rule, the com\u00admandment of love is a second sum\u00adma\u00adry of the Law and the Pro\u00adphe\u00adts. When we deal proac\u00adtively and in love with others, God\u2019s king\u00addom defi\u00adni\u00adte\u00adly takes shape.<\/p>\n

 
\nSome\u00adti\u00admes I lose track of things and don\u2019t do any\u00adthing out of sheer com\u00adple\u00adxi\u00adty. Last Mon\u00adday was my first day at work after a week\u2019s holi\u00adday. The\u00adre were 92 emails in my inbox. In order to get back to the dai\u00adly busi\u00adness as quick\u00adly as pos\u00adsi\u00adble, I try to pro\u00adcess them in a rush and dele\u00adte them when\u00adever pos\u00adsi\u00adble. This way, exter\u00adnal requests have litt\u00adle chan\u00adce of being con\u00adside\u00adred. The abun\u00addance and com\u00adple\u00adxi\u00adty of the requests para\u00adly\u00adse me more than they inspi\u00adre me.
\nIt could be the same for us with the Ser\u00admon on the Mount. Jesus speaks about many vir\u00adtu\u00ades. Ever\u00ady\u00adwhe\u00adre we dis\u00adco\u00adver poten\u00adti\u00adal for meta\u00admor\u00adpho\u00adsis. But it is too con\u00adfu\u00adsing and too com\u00adplex, so that we run the risk of doing not\u00adhing at all. This is a stumb\u00adling block on our way to a Jesus-like cha\u00adrac\u00adter, which Jesus coun\u00adters with the so-cal\u00adled Gol\u00adden Rule: \u00abDeal with others as others should deal with you. This sen\u00adtence sums up the Law and the Pro\u00adphe\u00adts\u00bb (Matthew 7:12 NLB<\/span>). Jesus is giving us some\u00adthing here that is clear and simp\u00adle and plausible.
\nTun
\nWith the Gol\u00adden Rule, Jesus does not place any increased empha\u00adsis on being ori\u00adgi\u00adnal. In Juda\u00adism at the time of Jesus, it was said that a man came to the famous tea\u00adcher Rab\u00adbi Hil\u00adlel and asked him to teach him the Jewish law during the time he could stand on one foot. Rab\u00adbi Hil\u00adlel said: \u00abWhat you do not want others to do to you, do not do to others. \nThe other day I saw a mother with her still small child in her arms. The litt\u00adle man felt like hit\u00adting the mother in the face with his litt\u00adle hands. The mother did\u00adn\u2019t think it was fun\u00adny, grab\u00adbed the litt\u00adle boy\u2019s hands and stop\u00adped the bea\u00adting. After a short while, howe\u00adver, the boy struck again. \u00abDo you want me to hit you too?\u00bb This was fol\u00adlo\u00adwed by two or three small blows. The boy was start\u00adled and irri\u00adta\u00adted. This irri\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon led to the boy stop\u00adping the hit\u00adting. \nJesus is not con\u00adtent with an avo\u00adid\u00adance tac\u00adtic that we mere\u00adly live con\u00adsidera\u00adte\u00adly side by side, but encou\u00adra\u00adges us to live cor\u00addi\u00adal\u00adly with one ano\u00adther. That is why Jesus for\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtes it posi\u00adtively: \u00abTre\u00adat others as others should tre\u00adat you. The Law and the Pro\u00adphe\u00adts are sum\u00admed up in this sen\u00adtence\u00bb (Matthew 7:12 NLB<\/span>). When life with God seems con\u00adfu\u00adsing and com\u00adplex, it is important to adhe\u00adre to this simp\u00adle basic rule and begin to live accor\u00addin\u00adgly. Peo\u00adp\u00adle of cha\u00adrac\u00adter have deve\u00adlo\u00adped the abili\u00adty not to shirk respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty with the com\u00adple\u00adxi\u00adty argu\u00adment, but to ask a simp\u00adle action-gui\u00adding ques\u00adti\u00adon: Do I tre\u00adat others the way I want to be treated?
\nDo proactively
\n\u00abDeal with others as you would have others deal with you.\u00bb The gre\u00adat thing for me is that Jesus first invi\u00adtes us to ask our\u00adsel\u00adves, \u00abWhat do I actual\u00adly desi\u00adre? What do I long for?\u00bb Jesus does not hurl pro\u00adhi\u00adbi\u00adti\u00adons and demands at us, but the simp\u00adle ques\u00adti\u00adon: what do I actual\u00adly want? Do what you want with every fib\u00adre of your body, what you want with your who\u00adle soul! Think of yours\u00adelf first and of what hap\u00adpi\u00adness means to you. And then do it for your neigh\u00adbour. That\u2019s the dif\u00adfe\u00adrence to nar\u00adcis\u00adsism: I don\u2019t stop at mys\u00adelf, but respect the other per\u00adson more than mys\u00adelf and beco\u00adme acti\u00adve in his favour.
\nThe Gol\u00adden Rule con\u00adtra\u00addicts the defen\u00adsi\u00adve atti\u00adtu\u00adde of wai\u00adting in the sen\u00adse of: I remain sus\u00adpi\u00adcious, wait and see first what good the other per\u00adson does for me; then as a reward I will repay him. He should earn my trust. No, the Gol\u00adden Rule wants us to be proac\u00adti\u00adve in doing good. Even pre\u00adcis\u00ade\u00adly towards peo\u00adp\u00adle who do not deser\u00adve it. We are cal\u00adled to action, not reaction.<\/p>\n

\tSo if I expect someone else to stand up for me when I am slan\u00adde\u00adred in absen\u00adtia, I mys\u00adelf can begin to put in a good word for others.
\n\tIf I hope that I will be for\u00adgi\u00adven whe\u00adre I have beco\u00adme guil\u00adty, I can start mys\u00adelf \u2013 no mat\u00adter whe\u00adther the other per\u00adson has alre\u00ada\u00addy asked me for for\u00adgi\u00adve\u00adness or not.
\n\tIf I am alo\u00adne at home and annoy\u00aded that no one visits me, I can set out on my own to seek out someone else.
\n\tAnd if it would plea\u00adse me that others pray for me, I mys\u00adelf can say a pray\u00ader for others.<\/p>\n

It is incre\u00addi\u00adble: in this one sen\u00adtence of Jesus is the poten\u00adti\u00adal for a new cul\u00adtu\u00adre accor\u00adding to the new world of God.
\nDoing proac\u00adti\u00adve loving
\nJesus says that the Gol\u00adden Rule sum\u00adma\u00adri\u00adses the Pro\u00adphe\u00adts and the Law. In the same Gos\u00adpel, Jesus gives ano\u00adther sum\u00adma\u00adry of the Pro\u00adphe\u00adts and the Com\u00admandments. Jesus\u00bb fri\u00adends asked: \u00ab \u00abMas\u00adter, which is the most important com\u00admandment in the Law of Moses?\u00bb Jesus ans\u00adwe\u00adred: \u00abYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind!\u00bb This is the first and most important com\u00admandment. Ano\u00adther is equal\u00adly important: \u00abLove your neigh\u00adbour as yours\u00adelf\u00bb. All the other com\u00admandments and all the demands of the pro\u00adphe\u00adts are based on the\u00adse two com\u00admandments\u00bb (Matthew 22:36\u201340 NLB<\/span>).
\nIt seems to me that Jesus goes one bet\u00adter here and defi\u00adnes in which direc\u00adtion we should act: To love God, our neigh\u00adbour and our\u00adsel\u00adves. Now our action gets a clear con\u00adtour. First of all, we are to love God. The core of the Ser\u00admon on the Mount is pray\u00ader. In pray\u00ader we cul\u00adti\u00adva\u00adte love for our hea\u00adven\u00adly Father. In this encoun\u00adter, our heart is again fil\u00adled with love so that we can give it to our neigh\u00adbour. It is said: \u00abThe deepest reason for our con\u00adfi\u00addence lies in God\u2019s love for us: we love becau\u00adse he first loved us\u00bb (1 John 4:19 NG\u00dc<\/span>). Gifted to give. Jesus\u00bb fri\u00adends asked on ano\u00adther occa\u00adsi\u00adon who their neigh\u00adbour was. With a para\u00adble (Luke 10:29ff) Jesus explains that it is not us who deci\u00adde, but the need of the per\u00adson around me. The need of my fel\u00adlow human being makes him my neighbour.
\nWhat needs are the\u00adre in my envi\u00adron\u00adment? I think of the list of sick peo\u00adp\u00adle, the tra\u00adgic death in our vil\u00adla\u00adge, the sin\u00adgle mother, the uproo\u00adted migrant for whom no one was wai\u00adting, the lonely neigh\u00adbour, the cou\u00adple who\u00adse mar\u00adria\u00adge has bro\u00adken up,\u2026 Accor\u00adding to Jesus, we should be lovin\u00adg\u00adly acti\u00adve and not wait until suf\u00adfe\u00adring peo\u00adp\u00adle ask us for help.
\nSome\u00adti\u00admes the\u00adre are situa\u00adtions when we are lonely in a group of peo\u00adp\u00adle. The fee\u00adling creeps over us that no one has been wai\u00adting for us. The\u00adre are peo\u00adp\u00adle who expe\u00adri\u00adence this on Sun\u00adday around the church ser\u00advice. You can prac\u00adti\u00adse love today by approa\u00adching someone who is not one of your \u00abBest Fri\u00adends\u00bb. Don\u2019t go home dis\u00adap\u00adpoin\u00adted becau\u00adse no one has approa\u00adched you. Be proac\u00adti\u00adve! \u00abDeal with others as others should deal with you.\u00bb If we put this into prac\u00adti\u00adce in see\u00adtal chi\u00adle, we will expe\u00adri\u00adence a cul\u00adtu\u00adre chan\u00adge and expe\u00adri\u00adence real com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. No one will feel \u00aborde\u00adred and not picked up\u00bb any\u00admo\u00adre. By the way, the migrants in our vil\u00adla\u00adges know through and through the fee\u00adling that nobo\u00addy was wai\u00adting for them. If only every twen\u00adtieth per\u00adson among us would give such a per\u00adson the fee\u00adling of being wel\u00adco\u00adme, we would have hea\u00adven on earth.
\nI also feel that the cur\u00adrent situa\u00adti\u00adon sur\u00adroun\u00adding the Covid cer\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adte is a real acid test for cha\u00adri\u00adty. Here, too, I have to out\u00addo the other per\u00adson with my deed of love. To do mys\u00adelf what I would like to expe\u00adri\u00adence from the other. Unity is given to us. We must fight to defend it. If we first make the sacri\u00adfice we would like the other to make, we will not only get by, but grow to a new maturity!
\nIn both Bible pas\u00adsa\u00adges, we our\u00adsel\u00adves are the refe\u00adrence: \u00abDeal with others as others should deal with you.\u00bb \u00abLove your neigh\u00adbour as yours\u00adelf.\u00bb How much do you love yours\u00adelf? For it could be that you have litt\u00adle self-respect, and are the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre total\u00adly unde\u00adman\u00adding, thin\u00adking that you don\u2019t deser\u00adve any\u00adthing good any\u00adway. The\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre, the pivo\u00adtal point of this Gol\u00adden Rule is how you tre\u00adat yours\u00adelf. Do you have a com\u00adple\u00adte yes to yours\u00adelf? Are the\u00adre any ske\u00adle\u00adtons in your clo\u00adset that you hate yours\u00adelf for? Are the\u00adre deeds that you can\u00adnot for\u00adgi\u00adve yours\u00adelf for?
\nFor a meta\u00admor\u00adpho\u00adsis into Jesus-liken\u00adess, you have to love yours\u00adelf. I am not tal\u00adking about nar\u00adcis\u00adsism. Nar\u00adcis\u00adsism is a patho\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal self-absorp\u00adti\u00adon that stops at its\u00adelf. If you don\u2019t have a who\u00adle yes to yours\u00adelf, then you should defi\u00adni\u00adte\u00adly seek pas\u00adto\u00adral help. Only when you have built up a good rela\u00adti\u00adonship with yours\u00adelf do you get to know your own pas\u00adsi\u00adons and desires.

\nAnd what if our love is dis\u00adap\u00adpoin\u00adted? When what we do good is rejec\u00adted? Well, the\u00adre is no love for other peo\u00adp\u00adle that does not car\u00adry the risk of being dis\u00adap\u00adpoin\u00adted. God hims\u00adelf expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced this in Jesus. Jesus embo\u00addi\u00aded, he lived God\u2019s love among peo\u00adp\u00adle, but he was met with hat\u00adred from influ\u00aden\u00adti\u00adal cir\u00adcles. This brought Him to the cross. Jesus acted proac\u00adtively and lovin\u00adg\u00adly. The\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre, and only the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre, can he offer us sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon and the super\u00adna\u00adtu\u00adral gift of metamorphosis!
