HE<\/span> is mer\u00adciful and of gre\u00adat good\u00adness and com\u00adbi\u00adnes all the other excel\u00adlent qua\u00adli\u00adties. A person\u2019s cal\u00adling is to beco\u00adme more like this God. Let your\u00adsel\u00adves be trans\u00adfor\u00admed in your being! Our con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adon is to app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adte this God, spend time with Him and lis\u00adten to Him. Ever\u00ady\u00adthing else runs by itself.<\/p>\n

 
\nI still have a sen\u00adtence from Ren\u00e9 Wink\u00adler in my ears, which he utte\u00adred in his ser\u00admon here a few weeks ago: \u00abChris\u00adti\u00adans who do not allow them\u00adsel\u00adves to be chan\u00adged are not neu\u00adtral, but immu\u00adni\u00adse against faith in Jesus Christ.\u00bb Such Chris\u00adti\u00adans beco\u00adme comic\u00adal, harsh, self-righ\u00adteous and judgmen\u00adtal. They remain cater\u00adpil\u00adlars and miss the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon into but\u00adter\u00adflies. A huge poten\u00adti\u00adal lies fallow. Ins\u00adtead of being a \u00abfra\u00adgrance of good\u00bb (2 Corin\u00adthi\u00adans 2:15) to the world, they spread a stink.
\nThe poten\u00adti\u00adal that lies in a fol\u00adlower of Jesus is cal\u00adled: \u00abBut you are to be per\u00adfect, just as your Father in hea\u00adven is per\u00adfect\u00bb (Matthew 5:48 NLB<\/span>). Beco\u00adme like Dad. The apple should not fall far from the tree. Many boys want to learn the same pro\u00adfes\u00adsi\u00adon as their father. And becau\u00adse child\u00adren each have half the DNA<\/span> of their par\u00adents, simi\u00adla\u00adri\u00adties of cha\u00adrac\u00adter often beco\u00adme very clear.
\nWhat\u2019s he like, the dad?
\nBeco\u00adming like Dad is the chall\u00adenge of the Ser\u00admon on the Mount. What is the Father in hea\u00adven like? The vir\u00adtu\u00ades of God are descri\u00adbed in the Ser\u00admon on the Mount. Thus, each beati\u00adtu\u00adde points to one of them: Humi\u00adli\u00adty, suf\u00adfe\u00adring from the hard\u00adship of the world, non-vio\u00adlence, lon\u00adging for jus\u00adti\u00adce, cla\u00adri\u00adty of heart, rea\u00addi\u00adness for recon\u00adci\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon and will for peace, and rea\u00addi\u00adness to endu\u00adre oppo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon for the sake of justice.
\nThis year\u2019s offi\u00adci\u00adal annu\u00adal mot\u00adto takes up one of the\u00adse vir\u00adtu\u00ades: \u00abBe mer\u00adciful, as your Father is mer\u00adciful\u00bb (Luke 6:36 NG\u00dc<\/span>). Our Dad\u00addy is mer\u00adciful. He has a heart for the poor. He is \u00abfather of the fat\u00adher\u00adless and hel\u00adper of widows\u00bb (Psalm 68:6 NLB<\/span>). Jesus\u00bb respon\u00adse to the needs of indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adals such as a leper was, \u00abAnd it grie\u00adved him\u00bb (Mark 1:41 LUT<\/span>). The Greek term means to turn over one\u2019s bowels. Jesus was repea\u00adted\u00adly moved by deep com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon. God is a Father whom our need touches.
\nIf one reads the text fur\u00adther, mer\u00adcy is made con\u00adcre\u00adte: \u00abJudge not, and ye shall not be jud\u00adged. Do not con\u00addemn, and you will not be con\u00addem\u00adned. Set free, and you will be acquit\u00adted\u00bb (Luke 6:37 NG\u00dc<\/span>). Mer\u00adcy is expres\u00adsed in our thin\u00adking and spea\u00adking about other peo\u00adp\u00adle. At the Olym\u00adpics, a Ger\u00adman coach moti\u00adva\u00adted his pro\u00adt\u00e9\u00adg\u00e9 on a racing bike in indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal time tri\u00adals by say\u00ading, \u00abGrab the camel dri\u00advers in front of you!\u00bb By this he meant an Eri\u00adtre\u00adan and an Alge\u00adri\u00adan who star\u00adted ahead of the Ger\u00adman. \n\u00abGive and you shall recei\u00adve. What you give away will flow back to you in a fair, even gene\u00adrous, mea\u00adsu\u00adre, with a con\u00adsidera\u00adble addi\u00adti\u00adon. Accor\u00adding to the mea\u00adsu\u00adre with which you give, you will recei\u00adve in return\u00bb (Luke 6:38 NLB<\/span>). Mer\u00adcy is also shown in action. Are we gene\u00adrous givers or defi\u00adcit-ori\u00aden\u00adted takers? Are we gene\u00adrous only with our\u00adsel\u00adves or spe\u00adci\u00adfi\u00adcal\u00adly with other peo\u00adp\u00adle as well? In Matthew 25:31\u201346 this vir\u00adtue is deve\u00adlo\u00adped and con\u00adcre\u00adti\u00adsed in the \u00absix works of mer\u00adcy\u00bb: Feed the hun\u00adgry, give drink to the thirsty, wel\u00adco\u00adme stran\u00adgers, clo\u00adthe the naked, visit the sick and the imprisoned.
\nOur daddy\u2019s guts are spin\u00adning in the face of the need in this world. Mela\u00adnie visi\u00adted the asyl\u00adum cent\u00adre in Hall\u00adwil some time ago. After\u00adwards she was quiet and intro\u00adver\u00adted. She had deep com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon that dro\u00adve her to action. For me, this was an impres\u00adsi\u00adve exam\u00adp\u00adle of the natu\u00adre of God. We have recent\u00adly been get\u00adting more insight into the lives of migrants around us. The need is gre\u00adat. Tho\u00adse who want to train their com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon will find a good trai\u00adning ground here.
\nAno\u00adther aspect of God\u2019s mer\u00adcy is found in the Psalms: \u00abThe LORD<\/span> heals the bro\u00adken\u00adhe\u00adar\u00adted and binds up their wounds\u00bb (Psalm 147:3 LUT<\/span>). HE<\/span> heals and binds up. God has a weak\u00adne\u00adss! And espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly for hur\u00adting peo\u00adp\u00adle and tho\u00adse who are dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adta\u00adged by life.
\nHow per\u00adfect can it be?
\n\u00abBut you are to be per\u00adfect, just as your Father in hea\u00adven is per\u00adfect\u00bb (Matthew 5:48 NLB<\/span>). What does per\u00adfect mean? Do we have to reflect the cha\u00adrac\u00adter of God in per\u00adfec\u00adtion? If so, we might as well clock out. It would also be demo\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading to stri\u00adve for some\u00adthing we are far from achieving.
\nThe Greek word t\u00e9lei\u00ados, used here for per\u00adfect, means \u00aban adult who has rea\u00adched his full sta\u00adtu\u00adre\u00bb. A stu\u00addent who has acqui\u00adred matu\u00adre know\u00adledge in a sub\u00adject is also a t\u00e9lei\u00ados. The Greeks con\u00adside\u00adred any object per\u00adfect that com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly ful\u00adfil\u00adled the func\u00adtion for which it was desi\u00adgned and made. Man is per\u00adfect when he rea\u00adli\u00adses or ful\u00adfils the pur\u00adpo\u00adse for which he was created.
\nT\u00e9lei\u00ados thus ans\u00adwers the ques\u00adti\u00adon of whe\u00adther a per\u00adson lives in his voca\u00adti\u00adon or not. For what is man crea\u00adted? At the very end of the Bible, a con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adon is descri\u00adbed that God had always been aiming at: \u00abI heard a loud voice from the thro\u00adne shou\u00adting, \u00abBehold, the dwel\u00adling place of God is now with men! He will dwell with them and they will be his peo\u00adp\u00adle, and God hims\u00adelf will be with them\u00bb (Reve\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon 21:3 NG\u00dc<\/span>). The aim of the sal\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon pro\u00adgram\u00adme is to dwell with men, or rather in men. This is the first and gene\u00adral cal\u00adling, to offer dwel\u00adling space to God.
\nWhen God com\u00adman\u00added his peo\u00adp\u00adle to build the taber\u00adna\u00adcle, he said, \u00abThe Israe\u00adli\u00adtes are to build a sanc\u00adtua\u00adry for me, so that I may dwell with them\u00bb (Exodus 25:8 NLB<\/span>). It is the won\u00adderful idea of God from the begin\u00adning that he wants to dwell among the peo\u00adp\u00adle. Later, God dwelt in the temp\u00adle and mani\u00adfes\u00adted hims\u00adelf in this world through the temp\u00adle. How does this won\u00adderful idea of God mate\u00adria\u00adli\u00adse in our modern times when we no lon\u00adger have a temp\u00adle in Jeru\u00adsa\u00adlem? Paul ans\u00adwers this ques\u00adti\u00adon for us: \u00abDo you not rea\u00adli\u00adse that you are the temp\u00adle of God and that the Spi\u00adrit of God dwells in you?\u00bb (1 Corin\u00adthi\u00adans 3:16 NLB<\/span>).
\nThe second voca\u00adti\u00adon ans\u00adwers the indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal ques\u00adti\u00adon of whe\u00adther a per\u00adson is in the place and doing what he is led to do by the Spi\u00adrit of God. In C\u00e9d\u00adric B.\u2019s appli\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon pro\u00adcess, we all got the impres\u00adsi\u00adon that he was led to us by God. Befo\u00adre it is about what he and also our intern are doing here and how well they are doing it, they are both cal\u00adled to beco\u00adme per\u00adfect, to beco\u00adme like Papa. What should be the hig\u00adhest prio\u00adri\u00adty in their lives? \u00ab[\u2026] And what is this mys\u00adtery? \u00abChrist in you \u2013 the hope of God\u2019s glo\u00adry!\u00bb \u00bb (Colos\u00adsi\u00adans 1:27 NG\u00dc<\/span>). Do not stri\u00adve for the good vir\u00adtu\u00ades, but for your\u00adsel\u00adves to beco\u00adme a sanc\u00adtua\u00adry, so that Christ dwells in you and has much room. And then it hap\u00adpens of its own accord: \u00abThrough Jesus Christ, may he bring about in our lives that in which he delights. To him be the glo\u00adry for ever and ever. Amen\u00bb (Hebrews 13:21 NG\u00dc<\/span>). Be trans\u00adfor\u00admed in your being! That is the best inten\u00adti\u00adon you can have here.
\nHow do we get there?
\nHow do we beco\u00adme like the dad\u00addy now? Tabea and Kusi were both in our staff team for a long time. Now they both lead a church con\u00adgre\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon them\u00adsel\u00adves. We exch\u00adan\u00adge ide\u00adas again and again, and they both tell me how they imple\u00adment many of the things they lear\u00adned in see\u00adtal chi\u00adle in their cur\u00adrent place. Part of our DNA<\/span> lives on else\u00adwhe\u00adre. Tinu, our Kid\u00ads\u00adpas\u00adtor, was in Stein am Rhein for a week and work\u00aded with Kusi the\u00adre. After his return, he said that the way Kusi leads the church reminds him a lot of my way. I hope that works out well! \ud83d\ude09 Why is that? Becau\u00adse we value each other and have been fight\u00ading side by side for the king\u00addom of God for some time. Moreo\u00adver, the two of them have lis\u00adten\u00aded to the pod\u00adcasts of spee\u00adches on our relaunch that I gave at a con\u00adfe\u00adrence a few years ago.
\nIn the same way, we beco\u00adme like the dad\u00addy! It\u2019s mutu\u00adal attrac\u00adtion and app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adon, lots of time tog\u00ade\u00adther and lis\u00adtening to God\u2019s word. That\u2019s how we beco\u00adme like Papa \u2013 all of us. As we cele\u00adbra\u00adte this day, I want to focus the\u00adse thoughts on our new team mem\u00adbers. You both want to fer\u00advent\u00adly invest your\u00adsel\u00adves in the church and do good for it. Only \u2013 how can this be done? The most pro\u00adfi\u00adta\u00adble thing for ever\u00adyo\u00adne is for you to beco\u00adme like Papa! This is not done by wri\u00adting good ser\u00admons or attrac\u00adti\u00adve kigo les\u00adsons, but by expo\u00adsing you to the natu\u00adre of God and soa\u00adking up his words. Mutu\u00adal attrac\u00adtion and app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adon, lots of time tog\u00ade\u00adther and lis\u00adtening to God\u2019s Word \u2013 many think this hap\u00adpens natu\u00adral\u00adly for church workers who walk around all day with Bible in hand. But it does\u00adn\u2019t! Church workers strugg\u00adle against the same odds as ever\u00adyo\u00adne else. You can\u00adnot tick off the rela\u00adti\u00adonship with God professionally.
\nIn a fami\u00adly, child\u00adren grow into a resem\u00adblan\u00adce to their par\u00adents by them\u00adsel\u00adves. We can edu\u00adca\u00adte child\u00adren with words, but in the end our exam\u00adp\u00adle speaks much lou\u00adder. Someone said, \u00abThe most powerful means of brin\u00adging up child\u00adren is the exam\u00adp\u00adle of their par\u00adents.\u00bb This puts us in a gre\u00adat respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty. For it would be desi\u00adra\u00adble if the gap bet\u00adween the exam\u00adp\u00adle of par\u00adents and the per\u00adfec\u00adtion of God were as small as pos\u00adsi\u00adble. This means that we par\u00adents, if only for the sake of edu\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon, would deve\u00adlop our\u00adsel\u00adves in the direc\u00adtion of the cha\u00adrac\u00adter image of God. \u00abIt is not what we say to our child\u00adren that decisi\u00adve\u00adly shapes them, but the way we are, the way we live, the way we tre\u00adat them and other peo\u00adp\u00adle and the things that are important to us\u00bb (Irmela Hofmann).
\n\u00abBut you are to be per\u00adfect, just as your Father in hea\u00adven is per\u00adfect\u00bb (Matthew 5:48 NLB<\/span>). Through faith in Jesus Christ, we beco\u00adme God\u2019s dwel\u00adling places. When we give Him this space, He Hims\u00adelf will trans\u00adform us into His image. He who has God in his heart beco\u00admes perfect.
