Bible Text: Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans 4:16 | Pre\u00ada\u00adcher: Bern\u00adhard Hohl | Series: Like you and me | Fasci\u00adna\u00adting flas\u00adhes from the lives and faith of others! In two ser\u00admons we will look into the lives of three brot\u00adhers and sis\u00adters, first from the OT<\/span> (today 19 July) and then (2 August) from the NT<\/span>. I am pur\u00adsuing two goals with this:<\/p>\n

\tI want to know how their sis\u00adter\u00adly coexis\u00adtence worked.
\n\tI want to know if cer\u00adtain obser\u00adva\u00adtions can be trans\u00adfer\u00adred to our fra\u00adter\u00adnal coexis\u00adtence in the con\u00adgre\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon \u2013 which would be a bles\u00adsing for us all!<\/p>\n

Here in the con\u00adgre\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon we have the good habit of intro\u00addu\u00adcing peo\u00adp\u00adle from time to time; and I noti\u00adce that when this hap\u00adpens, ever\u00adyo\u00adne looks for\u00adward with fasci\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon and pricks up their ears, becau\u00adse flas\u00adhes from the life and faith of the peo\u00adp\u00adle con\u00adcer\u00adned are fasci\u00adna\u00adting! Today we look into the lives of three brot\u00adhers and sis\u00adters from the OT<\/span>. I am pur\u00adsuing two goals with this:<\/p>\n

The three siblings are child\u00adren of Amram and his wife Jochebed. The cou\u00adple belongs to the peo\u00adp\u00adle of Isra\u00adel, who had to do drud\u00adgery in Egypt at that time. The Pha\u00adraoh of the coun\u00adtry beca\u00adme incre\u00adasing\u00adly afraid becau\u00adse the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes were gro\u00adwing in num\u00adber and power, so he orde\u00adred the Egyp\u00adti\u00adan mid\u00adwi\u00adves to throw all the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes\u00bb new\u00adborn males into the Nile. Jochebed gave birth to a boy exact\u00adly at this time. She tried to hide him and keep him as quiet as pos\u00adsi\u00adble, which only suc\u00adcee\u00added for a short time. The day came when the mother knew no other way out than to put her youn\u00adgest child in a bas\u00adket made of reeds and to aban\u00addon him in the reeds on the banks of the Nile as a kind of \u00abbaby post\u00bb.

\nNow we get to know the first of the team of three: Mir\u00adjam! She does\u00adn\u2019t take her eyes off this \u00abNile Mail\u00bb from a safe distance. Pharaoh\u2019s daugh\u00adter comes with her maids to the bank of the Nile for a bath. They hear a child crying and dis\u00adco\u00adver the bas\u00adket in the water.
\nThey open it and look at a crying baby. The king\u2019s daugh\u00adter has mer\u00adcy, falls in love with the beau\u00adtiful child and would like to take it with her. Miri\u00adam, who over\u00adhe\u00adars ever\u00ady\u00adthing, bra\u00adve\u00adly goes to Pharaoh\u2019s daugh\u00adter and asks her if she should call a Hebrew woman who could nur\u00adse the child for her. \u00abYes, do that!\u00bb is the rep\u00adly. This was, of cour\u00adse, good news for Jochebed, who imme\u00addia\u00adte\u00adly goes to the shore with Miri\u00adam. The king\u2019s daugh\u00adter pro\u00admi\u00adses the woman a wage for breast\u00adfee\u00adding and Jochebed pro\u00admi\u00adses in return to bring the \u00abfound\u00adling\u00bb back to her as soon as it is weaned.

\nTwo things exci\u00adte me about this \u00abheart cine\u00adma\u00bb story:<\/p>\n

\ta) The gre\u00adat, inti\u00adma\u00adte and sacri\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adal love of Miri\u00adam for her litt\u00adle brot\u00adher! She does not let him out of her sight.
\n\tb) Then the extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adna\u00adry cou\u00adra\u00adge of the young girl to address the noble person!<\/p>\n

This love for the brot\u00adher chal\u00adlenges us! As child\u00adren of God we are brot\u00adhers and sis\u00adters in faith! A Miri\u00adam sto\u00adry can also hap\u00adpen to you in your envi\u00adron\u00adment, in your imme\u00addia\u00adte vici\u00adni\u00adty! May\u00adbe the\u00adre is a per\u00adson in your envi\u00adron\u00adment who is in need and you should not let them out of your sight? May\u00adbe you can cou\u00adra\u00adge\u00adous\u00adly stand up for this per\u00adson? Miri\u00adam is an exam\u00adp\u00adle of Jesus\u00bb love. He does not let you out of His sight. He has done ever\u00ady\u00adthing to save you. He even died on the cross for us humans to save us. And now he says to us in the Gos\u00adpel of John: \u00abI com\u00admand you to love one ano\u00adther just as I love you\u00bb (John 15:12 NL<\/span>).
\nMoses
\nWe know litt\u00adle about the youth of the for\u00admer baby of Amram and Jochebed. Jochebed did what she had pro\u00admi\u00adsed: \u00abWhen the boy was big enough, she brought him to Pharaoh\u2019s daugh\u00adter, who took him as her own son. Pharaoh\u2019s daugh\u00adter said, \u00abI drew him out of the water,\u00bb and named him Moses\u00bb (Exodus 2:10 NL<\/span>). Ste\u00adphen tells us about his life at the Egyp\u00adti\u00adan court and his deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment in his ser\u00admon in Acts: \u00abMoses was ins\u00adtruc\u00adted in all the know\u00adledge of the Egyp\u00adti\u00adans and grew up to be an elo\u00adquent, ener\u00adge\u00adtic man\u00bb (Acts 7:22 NL<\/span>). We meet Moses again much later at Pharaoh\u2019s court as a 40-year-old man. One day he obser\u00adves how an Egyp\u00adti\u00adan atten\u00addant mistre\u00adats a Hebrew. He goes after this Egyp\u00adti\u00adan and slays him. He buries the body in the sand. When Pha\u00adraoh lear\u00adns of this mur\u00adder, he wants to kill Moses. Moses has to flee. He finds a home with Reguel (the priest of Midi\u00adan, also cal\u00adled Jith\u00adro) and beco\u00admes a she\u00adp\u00adherd. What a des\u00adcent! The Egyp\u00adti\u00adan prin\u00adce beco\u00admes a she\u00adp\u00adherd in the pro\u00advin\u00adce! Through his flight and this des\u00adcent, Moses\u00bb cha\u00adrac\u00adter is honed. Moses takes Zip\u00adpo\u00adrah, a daugh\u00adter of his employ\u00ader, as his wife and soon the two enjoy their first son, Gershom.
\nMoses\u00bb vocation
\nAnd God did not lose sight of him! As a she\u00adp\u00adherd, Moses expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces a per\u00adso\u00adnal cal\u00adling from God on Mount Horeb. God meets him and gives him the mis\u00adsi\u00adon to lead the peo\u00adp\u00adle of Isra\u00adel to free\u00addom. Moses is com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly per\u00adple\u00adxed and per\u00adhaps thinks of his past: \u00abWho am I? I can\u2019t do this! I have a lame ton\u00adgue and can\u2019t speak well enough! They don\u2019t belie\u00adve me! No, \u00e4xg\u00fc\u00adsi plea\u00adse find someone else!\u00bb God encou\u00adra\u00adges him that he will always be with him. God even gives him two mira\u00adcu\u00adlous signs (a staff that beco\u00admes a sna\u00adke and vice ver\u00adsa, a hand that beco\u00admes leprous and is hea\u00adled again), but Moses firm\u00adly refu\u00adses. Then God gets angry with Moses and puts his brot\u00adher Aaron at his side. \u00abHe will speak for you. He is alre\u00ada\u00addy on his way to you and you will be glad to see him.\u00bb
\nNow Moses sets out with his fami\u00adly and heads for Egypt. On the way they actual\u00adly meet Aaron. Moses tells him ever\u00ady\u00adthing he has expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced so far. When they arri\u00adve in Egypt, they appear tog\u00ade\u00adther befo\u00adre the elders. Aaron speaks, Moses does the signs and what hap\u00adpens: \u00abThe peo\u00adp\u00adle belie\u00adved them. When they rea\u00adli\u00adsed that the Lord had seen their oppres\u00adsi\u00adon and cared for them, they knelt down and wor\u00adshi\u00adp\u00aded the Lord\u00bb (Ex 4:31).

\nJust as it hap\u00adpen\u00aded to my wife and me, it can also hap\u00adpen to you (or has alre\u00ada\u00addy hap\u00adpen\u00aded) that God has given you a very spe\u00adcial assign\u00adment and you react in the same way as Moses: \u00abNo, sure\u00adly not! That can\u2019t be. You\u2019\u00adve come to the wrong place!\u00bb And God then tells you: \u00abYou are not alo\u00adne, I am always with you. And the\u00adre will be others with you. You know me! You have alre\u00ada\u00addy per\u00adso\u00adnal\u00adly expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced my power and my pos\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adties.\u00bb When God calls you, he wants to bless you and make you a bles\u00adsing for others! The\u00adse can be big or small assign\u00adments, but we will always grow from such challenges!
\nAaron
\nAaron, No. 3 in this team, did it dif\u00adfer\u00adent\u00adly! God said to him in Egypt, \u00abGo out to meet Moses in the desert!\u00bb \u00abSo Aaron set out. He met Moses at the moun\u00adtain of God and kissed him\u00bb (Exodus 4:27 NL<\/span>). Aaron would also have had excu\u00adses: \u00abSure\u00adly I can wait until he gets here! What is the point of this arduous jour\u00adney into the desert the\u00adre and back? I haven\u2019t seen Moses for so long now, may\u00adbe I don\u2019t know him anymore.\u00bb
\nPer\u00adhaps you are expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adcing this right now, that Jesus is say\u00ading to you: \u00abGo towards this or that brot\u00adher in faith \u2013 towards this or that sis\u00adter in faith -; join tog\u00ade\u00adther!\u00bb Whe\u00adre does God want you to join with others for a com\u00admon mis\u00adsi\u00adon? It is easier with two! Whe\u00adre does God want to make you awa\u00adre in a com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly new way that you are a mem\u00adber of a who\u00adle that is con\u00adnec\u00adted with others? As it says in Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans: \u00abThrough him (Jesus) the who\u00adle body beco\u00admes one. And each part ful\u00adfils its par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar task and con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtes to the growth of the others, so that the who\u00adle body is healt\u00adhy and grows and is fil\u00adled with love\u00bb (Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans 4:16 NL<\/span>).
\nThe brot\u00adhers have found each other! They meet at the moun\u00adtain of God. This is not just a geo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcal indi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon! They meet with God, in his pre\u00adsence! God leads them both into an encoun\u00adter with him. And they stay tog\u00ade\u00adther. From this point on, the\u00adse two are usual\u00adly spo\u00adken of in the plu\u00adral: they went\u2026 they spo\u00adke\u2026 they both do mira\u00adcles! But Pha\u00adraoh has no ear for their request and he pres\u00adses God\u2019s peo\u00adp\u00adle even more into bon\u00adda\u00adge. The Egyp\u00adti\u00adans have to endu\u00adre 10 ter\u00adri\u00adble pla\u00adgues from God until the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes are final\u00adly allo\u00adwed to lea\u00adve the land after 430 years of slavery. I can only sum\u00adma\u00adri\u00adse the long histo\u00adry of the three brot\u00adhers and sis\u00adters, full of posi\u00adti\u00adve and nega\u00adti\u00adve things.
\n 
\nMiri\u00adam is later intro\u00addu\u00adced as a pro\u00adphe\u00adtess after the mira\u00adcu\u00adlous pas\u00adsa\u00adge through the Reed Sea, and as a pre\u00adcen\u00adtor and pre-dancer in worship:
\n\u00abThen Miri\u00adam the pro\u00adphe\u00adtess, Aaron\u2019s sis\u00adter, took a tim\u00adpa\u00adni in her hand, and all the women fol\u00adlo\u00adwed her with tim\u00adpa\u00adni in round dance. 21 And Miri\u00adam sang to them: Let us sing to the LORD<\/span>, for he is exal\u00adted; hor\u00adse and rider he has thrown into the sea\u00bb (Exodus 15:20\u201321 LU<\/span>). What ful\u00adfil\u00adling tasks for Miri\u00adam! But one day she teams up with Aaron and tog\u00ade\u00adther they rebel against her brot\u00adher Moses. In the sen\u00adse of: \u00abWhat does he actual\u00adly mean! Does he think God only speaks through him? He speaks through us too!\u00bb God tea\u00adches Miri\u00adam a les\u00adson with a sud\u00adden attack of lepro\u00adsy. But at Moses\u00bb pray\u00ader she is hea\u00adled. This inci\u00addent reminds us of the dan\u00adger of com\u00adpa\u00adri\u00adson: \u00abI would rather have the same job in the church as this one or that one! Why are\u00adn\u2019t the\u00adse or tho\u00adse in a clea\u00adning team \u2013 they could also lend a hand! Why did\u00adn\u2019t they ask me for the lea\u00adder\u00adship of the con\u00adgre\u00adga\u00adti\u00adon, for the mode\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of the ser\u00advice, for pas\u00adto\u00adral care? I could defi\u00adni\u00adte\u00adly do that bet\u00adter than them! I am just as faithful a Chris\u00adti\u00adan as the others!\u00bb Again, back to the body of Christ: All mem\u00adbers are extre\u00adme\u00adly important and valuable \u2013 no mat\u00adter whe\u00adre God places us!

\nAaron expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces his cli\u00admax when he beco\u00admes the first, lea\u00adding priest at the sanc\u00adtua\u00adry in the tabernacle.
\nHis big\u00adgest misstep hap\u00adpens when he is alo\u00adne with the peo\u00adp\u00adle and Moses stays a long time on Mount Sinai to fetch the tablets with the 10 Com\u00admandments. The peo\u00adp\u00adle were dis\u00adgus\u00adted by the long wait and per\u00adsua\u00added Aaron to make them a gol\u00adden calf, which was later wor\u00adship\u00adped by the peo\u00adp\u00adle as a god. He tempts the peo\u00adp\u00adle into ido\u00adla\u00adtry and sin. \u00abAaron \u2013 what were you thin\u00adking?\u00bb Could God have said that to you alre\u00ada\u00addy? Miri\u00adam a jea\u00adlous sis\u00adter; Moses a mur\u00adde\u00adrer; Aaron an ido\u00adla\u00adter; you and I a sin\u00adner \u2013 isn\u2019t God\u2019s grace inge\u00adnious! And God needs all of them for his plans. He keeps them all in his sight and con\u00adti\u00adnues with you and me!
\nIn the list of heroes of faith in Hebrews 11, only Moses is men\u00adtio\u00adned, the other two of the three brot\u00adhers and sis\u00adters are not. It is also not important that you and I are immor\u00adta\u00adli\u00adsed in a paper, but I want one thing for all of us with all my heart: that we are immor\u00adta\u00adli\u00adsed by being the\u00adre in eter\u00adni\u00adty in God\u2019s king\u00addom! Amen.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
