Bible Text: 1 Samu\u00adel 10; u. v. a. m. | Pre\u00ada\u00adcher: Mat\u00adthi\u00adas Alt\u00adwegg | Series: Like you and me | Saul was anoin\u00adted as the first king over Isra\u00adel. As equip\u00adment for this, the Spi\u00adrit of God came upon him. He was SPIRITED<\/span>. The Spi\u00adrit cau\u00adsed him to speak pro\u00adphe\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly, to be trans\u00adfor\u00admed into ano\u00adther per\u00adson and to be led by God. Through dis\u00ado\u00adbe\u00addience to God, he was deSPI\u00adRI\u00adTED, the Lord tur\u00adned away from him, which ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly ended in sui\u00adci\u00adde. We can learn a lot from this sto\u00adry for our life with the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

An advo\u00adca\u00adte (lite\u00adral\u00adly the sum\u00admo\u00adned one) is a lawy\u00ader or an advo\u00adca\u00adte. The New Tes\u00adta\u00adment word for the Holy Spi\u00adrit para\u00adkle\u00adtos also means the sum\u00admo\u00adned one. At Pen\u00adte\u00adcost, the Spi\u00adrit of God was sum\u00admo\u00adned to dwell in peo\u00adp\u00adle who trust Jesus Christ and live with him. Howe\u00adver, the Holy Spi\u00adrit is not an inven\u00adti\u00adon of the first Pen\u00adte\u00adcost in Acts 2, but was alre\u00ada\u00addy a guest with indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal peo\u00adp\u00adle befo\u00adre that.
\nCho\u00adsen and inspired
\nFor exam\u00adp\u00adle, on Saul. The peo\u00adp\u00adle of Isra\u00adel lived in a theo\u00adcra\u00adcy sin\u00adce their foun\u00adding by father Abra\u00adham. God spo\u00adke direct\u00adly to the respec\u00adti\u00adve lea\u00adder. After peo\u00adp\u00adle like Moses and Joshua, the\u00adse were the so-cal\u00adled jud\u00adges. During this dif\u00adfi\u00adcult time, the desi\u00adre grew among the Israe\u00adli\u00adtes for a king, just as their neigh\u00adbours had long had. Howe\u00adver, God \u2013 not enthu\u00adsi\u00ada\u00adstic about this idea \u2013 con\u00adce\u00added the mon\u00adar\u00adchy to them.
\nGod cho\u00adse Saul to be the first king over Isra\u00adel and at the right moment said to Samu\u00adel, his priest and pro\u00adphet: \u00abThis is the man I announ\u00adced to you! He will rule over my peo\u00adp\u00adle\u00bb (1Samuel 9:17 NL<\/span>). \u00abThen Samu\u00adel took a vial of oil and pou\u00adred it out over Saul\u2019s head\u00bb (1Samuel 10:1 NL<\/span>). At the anoin\u00adting as king he pro\u00admi\u00adses him: \u00abAt the same time the Spi\u00adrit of the Lord will come upon you with power\u00bb (v.6a NL<\/span>).
\nSaul, cho\u00adsen by God, recei\u00adved the Holy Spi\u00adrit. This pro\u00adcess has remain\u00aded the same until today. Cho\u00adsen and inspi\u00adred. The adven\u00adture \u00abLife with Jesus\u00bb always beg\u00adins with the elec\u00adtion by the hea\u00adven\u00adly Father (John 6:44). No one can find faith in Jesus Christ on their own. And then comes the gift of the Spi\u00adrit: \u00abThrough Christ you have also heard the truth, the good news that God saves you. You have belie\u00adved in Christ, and he has con\u00adfirm\u00aded you as his own with the seal of his Holy Spi\u00adrit, whom he pro\u00admi\u00adsed long ago\u00bb (Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans 1:13 NL<\/span>).
\nSPIRIT<\/span> led and changed
\nWhen the Spi\u00adrit of God moves into the home with a per\u00adson, a new era beg\u00adins: \u00abAt the same time, the Spi\u00adrit of the Lord will come upon you with power, and you will pro\u00adphe\u00adsy with them. You will be trans\u00adfor\u00admed into ano\u00adther per\u00adson. When the\u00adse signs have come to pass, do what you think is right, for God will be with you\u00bb (v.6+7 NL<\/span>).
\nOf the colourful bou\u00adquet of the effects of the Holy Spi\u00adrit, we see three in Saul:<\/p>\n

\tSpeak pro\u00adphe\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly. You might feel a litt\u00adle uncom\u00adfor\u00adta\u00adble about this. The Greek word for pro\u00adphe\u00adcy is made up of two words: pro and ph\u00e9\u00admi. Ph\u00e9\u00admi meant to speak, pro meant befo\u00adre. So, put tog\u00ade\u00adther, you could also say: to speak ahead or to bring some\u00adthing for\u00adward. At school, you elect a class repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adve. He knows the will and the opi\u00adni\u00adon of the class and brings it for\u00adward. He is, so to speak, the depu\u00adty spea\u00adk\u00ader. The one who speaks up or pro\u00adphe\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly. In the days of Saul, the class spo\u00adkesper\u00adson might have been cal\u00adled the class pro\u00adphet. To speak pro\u00adphe\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly means to know the thoughts of God and to com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adte them. In prin\u00adci\u00adple, every per\u00adson in whom the Holy Spi\u00adrit dwells has this gift. Accor\u00adding to Paul, the pro\u00adphe\u00adtic gift is valid and useful for the Church: \u00abLet love be your hig\u00adhest aim. But also stri\u00adve for the spe\u00adcial gifts the Spi\u00adrit assigns, espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly the gift of pro\u00adphe\u00adcy\u00bb (1Corinthians 14:1 NL<\/span>). This gift is also dif\u00adfer\u00adent\u00adly deve\u00adlo\u00adped in dif\u00adfe\u00adrent peo\u00adp\u00adle. We have a group that con\u00adscious\u00adly works with this gift and also offers pro\u00adphe\u00adtic prayer.
\n\tTrans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon into ano\u00adther human being. \u00ab[\u2026] Whoe\u00adver lives with Christ beco\u00admes a new per\u00adson. [\u2026] This new life comes from God alo\u00adne [\u2026]\u00bb (2Corinthians 5:17,18 NL<\/span>). The hea\u00adven\u00adly Father has not only cho\u00adsen us, but is also trans\u00adforming us into other peo\u00adp\u00adle. In which direc\u00adtion this chan\u00adge hap\u00adpens, we see in the fruit of the Spi\u00adrit, which the Spi\u00adrit makes grow in us: Love, joy, peace, pati\u00adence, kind\u00adness, good\u00adness, faithful\u00adness, gent\u00adle\u00adness and self-con\u00adtrol (cf. Gala\u00adti\u00adans 5:21,22). God\u2019s Spi\u00adrit trans\u00adforms us into a fra\u00adgrance of good for tho\u00adse around us. By behol\u00adding our Crea\u00adtor, we are trans\u00adfor\u00admed into His image (cf. 1 Corin\u00adthi\u00adans 3:16\u201318). Our part is to con\u00adtem\u00adp\u00adla\u00adte Him, the Spirit\u2019s part is to trans\u00adform us. We have to come to God so that he can do for us what we can\u00adnot do for ourselves.
\n\tGui\u00added by God. It is so bril\u00adli\u00adant to expe\u00adri\u00adence God\u2019s gui\u00addance in one\u2019s own life. He who has the full over\u00adview and knows me bet\u00adter than I know mys\u00adelf. The Holy Spi\u00adrit chan\u00adges our sen\u00adses in this direc\u00adtion, that we think and act more and more in the sen\u00adse of God. This is why Samu\u00adel could say, \u00abWhen the\u00adse signs have come to pass, do what you think is right, for God will be with you\u00bb (v.7 NL<\/span>). Our jud\u00adge\u00adment will sett\u00adle more and more in the cent\u00adre of God\u2019s will as time goes on, so that this swee\u00adping pro\u00admi\u00adse comes to pass. The con\u00adnec\u00adtion bet\u00adween the Spi\u00adrit of God and gui\u00addance in life is also shown to us by Paul: \u00abAll who are led by God\u2019s Spi\u00adrit are his sons and daugh\u00adters\u00bb (Romans 8:14 NG\u00dc<\/span>). The world is beco\u00adming more and more com\u00adplex, the opti\u00adons are gro\u00adwing expo\u00adnen\u00adti\u00adal\u00adly, how valuable it is to have a sure com\u00adpass. You don\u2019t have to be afraid and dither, but can go for\u00adward cou\u00adra\u00adge\u00adous\u00adly, \u00abfor God will be with you\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Dis\u00ado\u00adbe\u00addience and deGEIST
\nSaul had a good start as king over Isra\u00adel, he was popu\u00adlar and vic\u00adto\u00adrious. Actual\u00adly, the\u00adre was no reason to chan\u00adge any\u00adthing. But slow\u00adly, arbi\u00adtra\u00adry actions crept into his ever\u00ady\u00adday life. Once he was too impa\u00adti\u00adent and offe\u00adred a sacri\u00adfice to God hims\u00adelf, alt\u00adhough that was the priest\u2019s busi\u00adness. Then he ful\u00adfil\u00adled his mis\u00adsi\u00adon to the Ama\u00adle\u00adki\u00adtes only half-hear\u00adted\u00adly out of fear of the peo\u00adp\u00adle (1 Samu\u00adel 15:24). More and more he tole\u00adra\u00adted \u00ablitt\u00adle foxes in his viney\u00adard\u00bb, which ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly devas\u00adta\u00adted him. Then Samu\u00adel says to him: \u00abBecau\u00adse you have tur\u00adned away from the word of the Lord, he has now also tur\u00adned away from you; you will no lon\u00adger be king\u00bb (1Samuel 15:23 NL<\/span>). From then on things go downhill with Saul, he seeks David\u2019s life, falls into occul\u00adtism in the mat\u00adter of inqui\u00adring about the dead and in the end kills himself.
\nWe can grie\u00adve, dam\u00adpen and stif\u00adle the Spi\u00adrit of God. \u00abBe careful not to grie\u00adve the Holy Spi\u00adrit by your beha\u00adviour. Rather, remem\u00adber that you bear his seal and ther\u00adeby have assu\u00adrance that the day of redemp\u00adti\u00adon will come\u00bb (Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans 4:30 NL<\/span>). This state\u00adment shows that the Holy Spi\u00adrit will not be expel\u00adled from life. Chris\u00adti\u00adans, after all, as Paul men\u00adti\u00adons, \u00abbear his seal\u00bb on the day of redemp\u00adti\u00adon. The Spi\u00adrit of God is a down pay\u00adment on life in the imme\u00addia\u00adte pre\u00adsence of God in the new world (Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans 1:14). When we buy some\u00adthing or book a trip, we make a down pay\u00adment as a gua\u00adran\u00adtee that the deal will get off the ground. In this way, God gives us a gua\u00adran\u00adtee with the Holy Spi\u00adrit that glo\u00adry with God is our future.
\nBut \u2013 the effec\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness of the spi\u00adrit can be mas\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly down\u00adgra\u00added \u2013 like a car that is no lon\u00adger run\u00adning on all cylin\u00adders. This hap\u00adpens when we start to tole\u00adra\u00adte things in life that are not good. When we keep guilt in secret ins\u00adtead of con\u00adfes\u00adsing it. The Spi\u00adrit of God with\u00addraws in such situa\u00adtions \u2013 not as offen\u00added liver\u00adwurst \u2013 but as a gen\u00adtle\u00adman who does not impo\u00adse himself.
\nIn the Bible, blas\u00adphe\u00admy against the Holy Spi\u00adrit is lis\u00adted as a sin that can\u00adnot be for\u00adgi\u00adven. \u00abBut whoe\u00adver blas\u00adphe\u00admes against the Holy Spi\u00adrit has no for\u00adgi\u00adve\u00adness for eter\u00adni\u00adty, but is guil\u00adty of eter\u00adnal sin\u00bb (Mark 3:29 NL<\/span>). By accu\u00adsing Jesus of cas\u00adting out demons by demo\u00adnic powers, when in fact he was cas\u00adting them out by the power of the Holy Spi\u00adrit, the scri\u00adbes were effec\u00adtively cal\u00adling the Holy Spi\u00adrit a demon. This is blas\u00adphe\u00admy against the Holy Spi\u00adrit. Can peo\u00adp\u00adle still com\u00admit this sin today? Pro\u00adba\u00adb\u00adly not. This sin could only be com\u00admit\u00adted as long as Jesus was doing mira\u00adcles on earth. Becau\u00adse he is no lon\u00adger phy\u00adsi\u00adcal\u00adly pre\u00adsent today cas\u00adting out demons, this pos\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of blas\u00adphe\u00adming the Holy Spi\u00adrit no lon\u00adger exists. Peo\u00adp\u00adle who worry about having com\u00admit\u00adted the sin that can\u00adnot be for\u00adgi\u00adven have cer\u00adtain\u00adly not com\u00admit\u00adted it. The very fact that they worry about it pro\u00adves that they are not guil\u00adty of blas\u00adphe\u00admy against the Holy Spi\u00adrit. All sin can be for\u00adgi\u00adven \u2013 all sin \u2013 pro\u00advi\u00added the per\u00adson accepts forgiveness.
\nLike you and me. Not quite! We live after Pen\u00adte\u00adcost. In mat\u00adters of the Holy Spi\u00adrit, we no lon\u00adger live in a visi\u00adting cul\u00adtu\u00adre, but in a dwel\u00adling cul\u00adtu\u00adre. The Spi\u00adrit of God no lon\u00adger moves away, but stays. Our task is to see to it that he feels at home. How does that work? Paul says, \u00abDo not get drunk on wine, or you will ruin your lives. Ins\u00adtead, let the Holy Spi\u00adrit fill you\u00bb (Ephe\u00adsi\u00adans 5:18 NL<\/span>). The means to this are prai\u00adse and gra\u00adti\u00adtu\u00adde. If we do this, we remain SPIRITED<\/span> and are inspi\u00adred. The Spi\u00adri\u00adtus Sanc\u00adtus, the Holy Spi\u00adrit, is also in this word.
